The Glycemic Index measures the effect of carbohydrates on blood glucose levels (Wikipedia). A high glycemic indexed based diet is said to exacerbate acne, where a low indexed diet is said to help improve acne.

What we know:

  • In a study published in the July 2007 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, male subjects aged between 15 and 25-years-old, reduced acne while on a low-glycemic based diet.

  • Although patients did see a reduction in their acne lesions, Medscape CME made note that other factors such as the use of a topical acne treatment application or the change and addition to other "dietary factors" may have also contributed to the clear-skinned results.

Some of the foods may be of a surprise to you, especially because some of the above foods are pretty healthy. It is what it is though. Those are foods that are high on the glycemic index and may contribute to acne.
