Bismuth Oxychloride can definitely cause acne breakouts.

I recently did some research about Bare Minerals and how it's caused some people to breakout. Well, it turns out that Bare Minerals contains Bismuth Oxychloride.

According to this girl over at Yahoo Answers, along with her listed sources, Bismuth Oxychloride is a skin irritant that can be found in many forms of mineral makeups.

The girl stated, "I've been using Bare Escentuals makeup for about a year now and that's when my acne began flaring up and I began to have a cystic form of acne. Prior to using this mineral makeup, I only had a mild case of normal acne."

It's also known that along with acne, bismuth oxychloride can also cause redness, rashes, and irritation. With that being said, be sure to read your labels, people.

Hey baby, this is VERY useful information for not only me, but other viewers as well, because it seems BareMinerals is very popular amoung young women. After a few days of using bareMinerals, I started to have slight small red bumps upon my inner cheeks around the nasal area, and it looks somewhat like a mild rash. This may not happen to everyone, everyone's skin types are different and may tend to be sensitive so as this article says; read the ingredients located on the back peel of your make-up foundation. :)

Love, Nelly

No problem, as time is going by, I am making an educated guess simply to the fact that the bristles of the Buki Brush might be irritating my skin due to the fact I might have pressed it too hard against my face. I am currently using more of the Flawless Application Brush while applying my foundation, and i've noticed it hasn't gotten worse, so there's hope :) I am beginning to think it's not the Bismuth Oxychloride found in the foundation considering the fact I would be having irritation/redness on other parts of my face, but it's the bristles of the brush, and I might be applying too forcefully. Anyways I hope this helps anyone! :)

I love you baby :)
Acneteen.org has been such a success and I wish you the best of luck to your website & ance posts!

Thank you, baby. Those are some great points, although it is known that bismuth oxychloride is a skin irritant.

Regardless, your comments about the Buki Brush definitely make sense.

Thank you, baby.
I love you. :)

I recently bought bare minerals before going away on holiday whilst I was there I had a terrible rash which the doctors thought was prickly heat turns out to be a reaction to the make up!!! It felt like my face was burning! So much for 100% minerals! I hate this stuff! It took me ages to get rid of the rash it was even on my arms where the powder had sprinkled off the brush!

Hey all, I was just doing research on Bismuth Oxychloride myself, and I had a comment for Anonymous (the one who thinks the brushes are partially to blame): There are a couple things you can do. Try a thin layer of Mineral Veil UNDER the foundation. One of the problems with Bismuth Oxychloride is that it's microscopic shape is crystal, so that alone can irritate the skin without there being an actual allergy to the mineral by-product itself. Apply the Veil with the Flawless Face brush, then apply the Foundation with ANOTHER Flawless Face brush (or use quick change to clean the first one). THEN use a clean Soft Focus Face brush to buff in what's already on your skin. Buffing is important because it warms up your skin and the product, which makes the product blend in more evenly. If you need additional coverage, use the Soft Focus Face Brush. It's gentler than the Handi Buki and it's almost impossible to overdo the application, yet provides medium to full coverage!

If you still have irritation, switch to the Matte formula and use the Prime Time Foundation Primer Oil Control formula. Avoid using the Hydrating Veil, it contains the Bismuth, as well as the Tinted. The Original Veil does not though.

Hope that helps!

I had the same problem. I never had acne during teenage years. I just had one small zit at a time until I used BE mineral loose powder. It caused dryness, redness, itching and cyctic acne! It was so bad that I had see a doctor. Because I had it mostly on my chin they thought it was a related to an ovaries problem. All my tests were normal. I spent months in the doctor's office putting on disgusting creams on my face. I had the same problem when I used Maybelline Dreammatte Mouse. I wanted to scratch my face all day long and the acne came back! I cleared it up with Dermalogica acne kit. Now I am using Smashbox loose powder. It is formulated without bismuth oxychloride! Because of BE I hated loose powders. I think BE's products are BS!!!!

Plus Sephora and Ulta tells you BE products are their bestsellers. However, that doesn't mean that it's the best product out there. It's the best selling one, because simply they are pushing it to the customers. They tried to do the same to me and I told them I am allergic to BE products. I had to say it two so she moved her precious butt and checked out the ingredients in other products. Smashbox and AfterGlow mineral cosmetics are formulated without bismuth oxychloride. Companies use bismuth oxychloride because it gives a pearly glow. They are aware that this causes allergies on people, but simply they don't care, because there is no cheap substitute to this. Always read the ingredients of the products before buying it. Of course you can always try and return it, but like me after age of 20 you have to deal with cystic acne. They simply messed up my skin. I will never get back the skin I used to have before using BE!

I have friends that love this stuff, but I suffered a terrible allergy from BE. I started using the SP15 foundation containing bismuth oxychloride (bad bad bad) in mid-October and immediately experienced some itching, which got worse when sweating or just getting warm. But it looked so good on, gave me a really flawless finish. Small bumps, similar to a heat rash started to appear on my cheeks and around my nose by early December. Thinking that these minerals were good for me, I thought "at least I have this great makeup to cover it with". By the end of January I had developed cystic acne combined with a painful, burning sensation. I was devastated and thought it was hormonal, related to stress or the harsh winter weather... Didn't connect it to the BE until end of February and when I quit using it I still had terrible skin for months as all the small bumps turned into painful cysts one by one. Didn't develop any new bumps though. Tried every possible cream during this period, Epiduo helped a bit but was too harsh on my already mangled skin. Now, in early July I am finally starting to feel that my skin is starting to heal. It has been a nightmare, I confess being a bit vain about my skin but this was more than just a few pimples, it was a war zone.

The bare minerals matte foundation does not have bismuth oxychloride. Maybe you should try that one.
