Iodine Causes Acne: Avoid these Foods!!!

"Foods with high Iodine content, such as shellfish or seaweed, may cause flare-ups of acne." I was reading my Proactiv, "Your Answer for Acne" Guide, and I found some very interesting information that I thought I should share with you. Page 17 of the guide states that acne is not caused by greasy foods, chocolate, or coffee. However, it does state that foods with a "high iodine content" may contribute to your breakouts.

What exactly does this mean?

It means that there have been studies done that once and for all prove that I am a common-sensed genius. I said it before, and I will say it again; your acne and diet or the foods that you eat, at the minimum, play a slight role that determines whether or not you will get acne, and Proactiv has obviously conducted studies to prove it.

Foods with High Iodine Content:

  • Iodized salt
  • Sea salt
  • Seafood
  • Dairy Product - Oh man! I called this one awhile back!
  • Egg Yolks
  • Bakery products
  • Chocolate - Because of the milk it contains.

Avoiding iodine in hopes of decreasing acne severity or frequency is not a good idea. Look up "iodine deficiency" before you advocate the omission of iodine-rich foods from your diet. Iodine is a an element critical to the body's endocrine system, albeit in trace amounts when compared to calcium or such other standards of human physiology. The amount of iodine saturation required to contribute to a breakout of acne is astronomically high; you would need to be living on a diet of more than 80% fish and dairy products to come anywhere close. In fact, most people in the United States (especially between the ages of 18 and 30) tend to fall short of the daily recommended iodine intake, which secondarily stresses the thyroid gland and other systems in the body. In short, unless you enjoy fish and yogurt for three meals a day, it is unlikely that reducing your iodine intake will have any positive effect on acne; rather, it may have a detrimental effect on your overall health.

This advice is so horribly wrong it's scary. Taking iodine will more likely fix your problem especially if hormones are the cause. I guess proactive would rather you have an acne problem and keep buying their products. People reading this need to check out this post http://www.acne.org/messageboard/Scared-Iodine-t173456.html

the above comments are not true-- eating kelp, dairy and salt in significant quantities (by significant I don't mean excessive) causes me to break out like clockwork the next day without fail (especially kelp). Iodine causing acne has been accepted by medical community and has been known since 1960s.

I would drink milk by the litre when I was a teenager and now i am pretty sure that was the cause of acne, (I love dairy). Since going off dairy recently which is high in iodine, my face is clear for first time since age 12 -- I am 41

First off, Iodine DOES NOT cause acne, no way no how. I don't know where this myth started, but it's absolute bull. And telling people to avoid iodized salt, etc. is really dangerous because the body needs iodine to function...without iodine, the thyroid will stop functioning normally and THIS could cause acne, among lots of other problems in the body. Iodine is antibacterial and is often used in regimens to kill off candida and other pathogens in the body, so it is smart to assume that, if anything, iodine would help get rid of breakouts.

It's important to understand that acne is caused by genetics, not iodine. With that said, consuming excessive amounts of iodine can aggravate and further inflame already-existing acne. The government has set the RDA for iodine at just 150 mcg/day which is a small amount and most of us consume much more than that.
